Mooresville, N.C. – Veteran driver A.J. Frank and new USAR Hooters Pro Cup Series team Smith Performance Racing are proud to announce a partnership for the 2008 season.

Frank, who finished 11th in series points last year driving for Mac Hill Motorsports, will once again compete in the Sears Auto Center Northern Division, and his maiden voyage in the SPR No. 52 Chevy Monte Carlo will come Saturday in the Miller Lite 250 at South Boston Speedway.

He said he’s excited to work with SPR, led by the father-and-son duo of Billy and Bill Smith, and thrilled to be able to represent the team in the Smiths’ home state of Virginia.

"Our deal came together late, but we hope to make our mark quick at South Boston," said Frank, who has 13 top-five finishes and 29 top-10s in only 50 Pro Cup starts.

Bill Smith said he’s elated to work with a driver of Frank’s talent and experience in his squad’s first year in Pro Cup. He only wishes he and Frank had started talking earlier. The team effort will have been together for only 10 days when the green flag waves on Saturday. Until then, Frank’s immediate driving future and SPR’s immediate car-fielding future were unclear.

"We couldn’t be happier to have found A.J. and to have come to an agreement with him," said Smith, who has been involved with IHRA drag racing and NASCAR Late Models over the past few years. "He’s an excellent driver, of course, and he’s a great person to work alongside. I just wish we would have started this deal three months ago. We’ll be ready for South Boston, though. You can bet on that."

Indeed, Smith would have been hard-pressed to have found a better wheel man to get a car ready for South Boston in a short amount of time. Running in the top 10 has been routine for Frank at the famed track in Southside Virginia. He finished seventh and eighth in two races there last year, and his career-best South Boston finishes were both fourth-place runs, in 2005 and 2006.

"It seems like it’s been so long since I was behind the wheel of a racecar in a competitive situation," Frank said. "I’m grateful to the Smiths for giving me this opportunity. They bought a great car, and we’ve teamed up with T2 Motorsports, which should make for a stout combination this weekend."

Myrtle Beach, S.C.-A.J. Frank has some unfinished business in the Hooters Pro Cup Series, and he’s hoping he gets the chance to tie up some of those loose ends this season.
But he needs a little help.

With the season closing in, Frank finds himself without a ride for the upcoming year. As is typical in racing, sure-thing deals can fall through at the last minute. Frank’s did, but he’s hoping a new one can come along in time for the start of a new season.

"I’ve enjoyed running in the series, and I want to stay here," said Frank. "I thought everything was set to go for this year, but it just didn’t work out sponsor-wise. I have some funding to start the season, and I’m hoping I can find the right team to join up with. I’ve led races and had chances to win every year I’ve ran. With the right team, I know I can get to Victory Lane."

In 50 starts in the Hooters Pro Cup Series, Frank has racked up 14 top-five finishes, 29 top-10s and led 242 laps. Frank finished seventh in the overall standings in 2006 and 11th last season.

Mac Hill Motorsports driver A.J. Frank is ready to take his Camping World  Chevrolet Monte Carlo No. 56n to Lakeland for the final race in the champioship series.

The team has had an up and down season and is looking to end it with a win at Lakeland.
 The points battle is still wide open fron 3rd to 15th, and a good run here can put the Mac Hill Motorsports driver solidly in the top 5.

We took a moment with A.J and team owner Jack McNelly.
 
A.J, how do you  feel about your performance this season, and what are your plans for next season?
    " I have had alot of fun this season driving for Jack. The whole Mac Hill Motorsports team has given me a one- hundred percent effort. Even though we are still in the hunt to end in the top 5 in points our results still do not reflect how strong our team was this year. We are in the process of putting things together for next year but I plan to return to the pro cup series and contend for a championship."
 
Jack, how would you rate this seasons performance, and whats this i hear about a big move after the season ends?
  " This season certainly has been a bittersweet one.  We have had some awesome runs with A.J. that ended in poor finishes because of crashes.  The races at Madison and Salem are two examples of where I felt we had the car to beat but couldn"t "close the deal"

had a tough night in South Georgia.

A.J was swept up in a lap 25 accident that caused significant damage to his Chevy Monte Carlo. The crew worked feverishly to get the car back on the track and went down 23 laps. A.J soldiered on to a 28th place finish.

" We're now 11th in points, but 3rd to 15th is still a very tight battle.   
  We just need a strong performance at lakeland to end our year on a high note"

We took a moment to get some thoughts from A.J.

Are you excited to get back to South Georgia?
"We are very excited to go back to SGMP. The track was good to us last year, we qualified 3rd and finished 3rd."
How do you feel about your chances for the title?
"I feel we have an outside chance at the title, but all the competition in front of us and behind us is very stout, so we will have to be on top of our game, and they will need a little bad luck."
What's it going to take to get you that first win? 
"It is extremely hard to win one of these Pro Cup races. If we carry the momentum from the beach, anything is possible."

A.J. Frank and the Camping World / Mac Hill Motorsports Chevrolet Monte Carlo No. 56n team have a great points run at Myrtle Beach Speedway

Frank now heads for South Georgia Motorsports Park 7th in the title chase, only 86 points out of the lead and only 32 points out of third place.

With just two laps to go,  Frank knew he was a sitting duck after staying out on the track when the rest of the lead lap cars came in and pitted for fresh tires at the end of the Myrtle Beach event.

But Frank didn’t sit around and sulk about the decision, which left him fourth at the end of the night.  Instead, he looked at the bright side

“It wasn’t my decision (not to pit),” said Frank.  “Had I known when everyone dropped down how many cars were on the lead lap, I am sure we would have made a different decision.  We were fourth before the caution and finished fourth.  Plus, we gained five points by leading a lap. So it wasn’t too bad because of that.  There is nothing to hang our heads about.”
 
The 4th place finish also earned A.J the "The Greased Lightning Clean Team" top finishing bonus.

A.J. Frank and the Camping World/The Works/Coastal Medical Associates/Mac Hill Motorsports Chevrolet Monte Carlo No. 56n opened up the USAR Hooters Pro Cup Championship Series with a strong top-10 run at Mansfield (Ohio) Motorsports Speedway in the Sept. 1 running of the Charlie Campbell Memorial Sears Auto Center 250.

The race was eventful for Frank, who finished ninth after qualifying 12th.

“During the race we had two spins on the track, and visited pit road six times,” Frank said. “But we never lost our focus.

Currently eighth in USAR Hooters Pro Cup standings, Frank knows that he’s not the only member of team who needs to be focused.

The Clean Team competitor enters the title chase tied for ninth in points as the series heads to Mansfield (Ohio) Motorsports Speedway for the Sept. 1 running of the Charlie Campbell Memorial Sears Auto Center 250.

“This is the first race in the Championship Series,” Frank said, “and we’re only 55 points out of first place. The points can change dramatically after the first race, and I think we’re good enough to really improve our position. Mansfield’s a tough track, but we’re a tough team; I think we’re going to surprise a lot of people before the weekend’s through.”

Frank and the Camping World/The Works/Coastal Medical Associates/Mac Hill Motorsports Chevrolet Monte Carlo No. 56n team wrapped up the USAR Hooters Pro Cup Sears Auto Center Northern Division’s regular season on a high note, finishing eighth in the Aug. 11 Miller Lite 250 at South Boston (Va.) Speedway and fifth in Northern Division point standings.

“That was our goal tonight,” Frank said after the race, “to finish fifth in points. The pit crew has been doing a good job for me all year and they deserve the honor of being in the Pit Crew Challenge at the end of the year; I’m real happy for those guys.

“I don’t think I got any of the Clean Team bonuses tonight,” Frank continued, “but nonetheless it’s been an honor to be part of The Clean Team this year.”

After qualifying 17th, Frank charged his way toward the front from the start and flirted with the top five before settling for a solid top-10 finish.

“We just fought a real tight racecar tonight. It was real tight in the center. All night I was doing stuff to try to free it up, but it ended up just making me free off the corner. We hung on to what we could, and finished eighth.”

Only a single point out of fourth place in Northern Division points, Frank returns to the track after a second-place finish at Lake Erie (Pa.) Speedway, his best run of the season so far. He finished seventh in the previous South Boston race this season, and being the last regular-season event before the Championship Series, Frank plans to gain as many points as possible.

“Ron Hearidge, my crew chief, has done an awesome job getting this car ready for South Boston,” Frank said. “Our goal this week will be to gain a few spots in the championship without losing any spots. Over the past week we have changed a lot on the car for the weekend. It should pay off for us. It would be great to go into the Championship Series with a win.”

A.J. Frank and the Camping World/The Works/Mac Hill Motorsports Chevrolet Monte Carlo No. 56n team scored its best finish of the season so far, finishing second in the July 28 BFGoodrich.com 250 USAR Hooters Pro Cup Sears Auto Center Northern Division event at Lake Erie (Pa.) Speedway.

With new crew chief Ron Hearidge, Frank put the car 10th on the grid in qualifying. Then with new spotter Roman Pemberton, utilizing his NASCAR experience as he guided his driver during the race, Frank represented the Clean Team well with a runner-up finish.

“We had our best finish of the season,” Frank said after the performance, which puts the team fifth in points. “I’d like to thank Dange (Hanniford) and the rest of the team for a great job this weekend. My new spotter, Roman Pemberton, did an exceptional job during the race. I had to get up on the wheel to bring the car home in second place, but it was a great weekend for us and we brought the car home in one piece.”
